Making Free Pre-Primary and Secondary Education a Global Right

In partnership with Childhood Education International (CE International) the Committee on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN) invite you to join a timely discussion on an international initiative to strengthen children’s right to education through a proposed Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Advanced by a growing coalition of countries, including Sierra Leone, the Dominican Republic and Bulgaria, the initiative seeks to explicitly recognize the right to early childhood education and strengthen commitments to free public pre-primary and secondary education.

Quality early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong learning, wellbeing and opportunity. Yet millions of children worldwide continue to face barriers to accessing these essential early learning experiences. As governments and international partners consider how to increase investment in the early years, this initiative raises an important question: How can stronger legal commitments help turn global ambitions into meaningful action for children?

Join representatives from the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, supporting governments, Education Professionals and young advocates for a conversation about the proposed protocol, its potential implications for children and education systems worldwide, and the role of governments, civil society and young people in advancing this important effort.

Together, we will explore what it will take to make quality early childhood education not simply an aspiration, but a right that every child can enjoy.
