Kids At Work: Lewis Hine and the Crusade Against Child Labor
This is both a biography and a b&w photo essay starkly revealing the use of children as industrial workers in the early 20th Century. Hine was a teacher and photographer who became an investigative reporter for the National Child Labor Committee. His work became a catalyst for enacting child labor laws in the US. Convention on the Rights of the Child
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. The Convention changed the way children are viewed and treated – as human beings with a distinct set of rights instead of as passive objects of care and charity. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Convention there is much to celebrate, from declining infant mortality to rising school enrolment, but this historic milestone must also serve as an urgent reminder that much remains to be done. Too many children still do not enjoy their full rights on par with their peers.
