Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury

H.E. Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury is Founder of The Global Movement for The Culture of Peace; he served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, and as the Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the United Nations, responsible for the most vulnerable countries of the world.
Ambassador Chowdhury has devoted many years as an inspirational champion for sustainable peace and development and advancing the cause of the global movement for the culture of peace. In March 2000, as the President of the Security Council, he was instrumental in the adoption of the groundbreaking UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in which the Council recognized for the first time the role and contribution of women in the area of peace and security.
He has received many prestigious awards including the U Thant Peace Award, UNESCO Gandhi Gold Medal for Culture of Peace, the Government of Burkina Faso's highest honor for his championship of the cause of the most vulnerable countries; Spirit of the UN Award and University of Massachusetts Boston Chancellor’s Medal for Global Leadership for Peace; Honorary Doctorate from Soka University of Tokyo for his work on women’s issues, child rights and culture of peace as well as for strengthening of the United Nations;
Ambassador Chodhury is a Patron of the Committee on Teaching About the UN (CTAUN).
