Excellence in Education Award
One of the most important aims of CTAUN is to encourage and support educators to find ways of helping their students learn about the goals and work of the United Nations in all parts of the world. For each of our many conferences, a theme is chosen that examines a global issue of concern, and, ways in which the UN and other agencies approach possible solutions. Teachers and community leaders are encouraged to use information and materials from these conferences in the development of their own curricula and to share results with CTAUN through an annual Excellence in Education Award.
2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and its purpose as noted in the UN Charter: “We the peoples of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”
“The idea of War is obsolete” – Eleanor Roosevelt
In accordance with this event we were requesting participants to work on a project addressing the 2020 conference theme “War No More”
Teaching about disturbing, politically charged events such as war, the refugee crisis and detention centers can be a challenge for educators. When teaching students events tied around something that is very polarizing, it is important to allow all opinions, to have students seek trustworthy news resources offering different perspectives, and to foster critical thinking including empathy, perspective, and the “Rule of Law”. Teaching students to have productive conversations is a whole life skill. As educators we have an insurmountable amount of primary resources now available through the internet, google, and, podcasts. Here are 3 that many of you might be familiar with that offer instructional guidance from K-12 on this topic and can serve as a springboard while researching.
The following winners were selected in 2020 and received recognition during the conference:
Evaluation Committee:
1) The evaluation committee will read and review proposals submitted, and if time and location allows a site visit will take place. If not, a phone interview and discussion will occur.
2) There may be up to 3 awards granted ranging from K-12 to Higher Education.
3) All submissions will be reviewed by the CTAUN evaluation committee and selected projects will be reviewed by the committee at large.
4) Awardees will be notified more than a month before the conference date.
5) The guidelines and criteria for award submissions are posted on CTAUN’s website.
6) All awardees will be encouraged to attend the conference unless distance of travel makes that impossible.
